MDL

I need everyone to understand the level of excitement I have for this drama. Because when I tell you I am FANGIRLING over both leads — I mean full, unashamed, no dignity remaining fangirling.

IU. Byeon Woo Seok. Together. In a modern-day constitutional monarchy romance. With a contract marriage. And the director who did Alchemy of Souls and What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim.

I need to sit down. Actually I need to stand up. I don’t know what to do with myself.

The Premise

This drama is set in an alternate version of modern Korea where the country is still ruled by a constitutional monarchy. So it’s 21st century — smartphones, cosmetics companies, chaebol families — but there’s also a royal family, aristocratic class hierarchies, and titles that actually matter.

Seong Hui Ju (IU)

MDL

Is the second daughter of Korea’s wealthiest conglomerate family. She’s the CEO of Castle Beauty, a major cosmetics brand. She has beauty, brains, money, and a fierce competitive streak. She has EVERYTHING — except royal status. Because she’s a commoner. And in this world, being a commoner with billions is still less than being an aristocrat with nothing. Worse still, she’s an illegitimate child, which adds another layer of stigma.

Grand Prince Yi An (Byeon Woo Seok)

Is the second son of the king. He has the title. He has the royal blood. He has the dignity and charm that makes him “the most beloved royal” in the country. But he has NOTHING else. No real power. No property. No freedom. As the second son, he’s not in line for the throne. He’s been forced to suppress who he really is, hide his passions, and live in silence. He has a title that means everything on paper and nothing in reality.

So what happens? Hui Ju proposes a CONTRACT MARRIAGE to the prince. She gets the royal status she needs to break through the class ceiling. He gets… well, that’s the question, isn’t it? Because he’s not interested. She’s proactive and willing to throw her pride away to get what she wants. He’s melancholic and used to hiding himself. They shouldn’t work. But they will.

The production team has said the drama starts as a fast-paced battle of wits in the first half and then transitions into a serious, heartfelt romance in the second half. That pacing sounds perfect.

The Cast

IU (아이유) as Seong Hui Ju

Known for: My Mister, Hotel Del Luna, Scarlet Heart Ryeo, The Producers, Broker (film), Dream (film), Shades of the Heart (film)

Hello QUEEN. I don’t even know where to start because this woman is so talented it’s ridiculous. She can act. She can sing. She can make paint drying into appointment television. IU could read a takeaway menu and I’d give it 10/10.

What I love about her as an actress is that she picks projects that actually challenge her. I haven’t watched My Mister yet but it’s on my list. Hotel Del Luna though? That drama is nothing short of a MASTERPIECE. I loved it so much I watched it twice. She was glamorous and heartbreaking in equal measure — the way she carried that role, the layers she brought to it, the emotion behind the beauty. That’s IU. And now she’s playing a chaebol CEO in an alternate-reality monarchy? A woman who has everything except the one thing she can’t buy? That’s the kind of complex character IU does best — someone who looks like they’ve got it all together but is fighting battles nobody sees.

She described Hui Ju as a woman with a “proactive spirit” who’s willing to cast aside her pride to achieve her goals. That’s IU energy right there. The woman doesn’t half-do anything.

And she seems like such a genuinely nice person in real life too. Yes, I’m fangirling. I don’t care.

Byeon Woo Seok (변우석) as Grand Prince Yi An

Known for: Lovely Runner, Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency, Record of Youth, Strong Girl Nam Soon, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

I have been a fan of Byeon Woo Seok since Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency. That’s where I first noticed him and thought — this one is going to be something special. And then Lovely Runner happened in 2024 and the whole world caught up to what I already knew.

Here’s what I need people to understand about Byeon Woo Seok — he is NOT just a face. Yes, the face is beautiful. Obviously. The man looks like he was drawn by an artist who had unrealistic expectations. But he can ACT. He brings genuine emotion to his roles. He makes you believe. And he can even sing! He’s the full package and I’m tired of people reducing him to just visuals.

Prince Yi An sounds like a role made for him. A man who’s dignified and beloved but has to suppress everything about himself? Who lives in silence and hides who he really is? That quiet, simmering intensity is EXACTLY what Byeon Woo Seok does best. He doesn’t need to shout to make you feel things — he does it with his eyes, with stillness, with a look that says everything his character can’t.

And here’s the thing that fans are losing their minds over — IU and Byeon Woo Seok were BOTH in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo back in 2016. She was the lead, he had a smaller role. Ten years later, they’re reuniting as co-leads. From supporting player to leading opposite IU — that’s the glow-up of the decade.

Noh Sang Hyun (Steve Noh) as Min Jeong Woo

Known for: The Diplomat (Netflix US series), Pachinko

He plays the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea. The second male lead who’s going to complicate things. Having the PM involved in a drama about royal-commoner dynamics adds a political layer that could make this really interesting.

Gong Seung Yeon (공승연) as Yun I Rang

Known for: Are You Human?, Master’s Sun, Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency, Circle

I really like this actress! Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency is where I first saw her — same as Byeon Woo Seok actually, so the fact that BOTH of them are in this drama from a show that made me a fan of them? That’s a full circle moment. Last year she was in My Lovely Journey which I really enjoyed even though a lot of fans didn’t. It was simple but it felt REAL. It was heartfelt, a proper slice of life, nothing too dramatic — which I actually enjoy. And it showcased her skills because her character was going through a lot and had a rollercoaster of emotions. She handled every beat of it beautifully. So seeing her as the second female lead here alongside IU? I’m excited for her.

The Creative Team — This Is STACKED

The director is Park Joon Hwa

This is where it gets really exciting. He directed Alchemy of Souls (both seasons)

and What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim.

Two MASSIVE dramas. Alchemy of Souls proved he can do fantasy world-building with emotional depth. Secretary Kim proved he can do rom-com with perfect comedic timing. Perfect Crown needs BOTH those skills — the alternate-reality monarchy requires world-building, and the contract marriage requires comedy and romance. He’s the right person for this.

There’s also a co-director, Bae Hee Young, working alongside him.

The screenwriter is Yoo A In Before anyone asks, no, not the actor. This is a different person. The script won an award, which is how it got picked up. It’s an original story, not based on a webtoon or novel.

What I’m Excited About

IU. Just IU. This woman elevates everything she touches. She picks projects carefully and she doesn’t miss. If she chose this drama, there’s a reason. And I trust her judgement completely.

Byeon Woo Seok proving himself again. After Lovely Runner broke the internet, there’s pressure on his next project. This is it. Opposite IU. On MBC. 12 episodes. If he delivers — and I believe he will — this cements him as one of this generation’s leading men. He’s not just a face. He can act. And he can even sing. Let the man COOK.

The alternate-reality setting. Modern Korea but with a constitutional monarchy? That’s fresh. It’s not a sageuk. It’s not a standard rom-com. It’s something in between — contemporary fashion, modern technology, but with royal hierarchies, class systems, and titles that actually determine your life. That’s a world I want to explore.

The contract marriage starting point. She proposes to him. SHE proposes to HIM. A commoner chaebol CEO proposing to a prince? The audacity. The power dynamics. The potential for comedy AND tension. This is going to be so good.

The Scarlet Heart Ryeo reunion. Ten years apart. She was the lead, he was a supporting player. Now they’re equals. The narrative is writing itself and the fans are already emotional about it.

90-minute episodes. These are CHUNKY episodes. 12 episodes at 90 minutes each gives us 18 hours of content. That’s the equivalent of an 18-episode standard drama. Plenty of room to breathe.

Disney+ international streaming. No waiting for subs. No hunting for sources. It’ll be right there on Disney+ for international viewers alongside the MBC broadcast.
