My Royal Nemesis (멋진신세계) — Upcoming Drama Preview: A Joseon Villainess Gets Poisoned, Wakes Up in 2026 in a Struggling Actress’s Body, and Decides to Use a Chaebol as Her Shield

SBS | Fridays & Saturdays 9:50pm KST | Premieres May 8, 2026 | 14 Episodes × 70 min | Streaming on Netflix

I’m thinking Mr. Queen but going into the future and I am HERE for it. A notorious Joseon-era villainess — the most hated concubine in court history — gets sentenced to death by poisoning. She opens her eyes in 2026 inside the body of a struggling actress. She’s fish-out-of-water confused for about five seconds before deciding that the afterlife is worse than ANY situation she’s in now, and she’s going to SURVIVE this new world by any means necessary.

Step one? Find a rich, powerful man to use as a shield. Enter the ruthless chaebol heir. He has no idea what just walked into his life.

I’m actually looking forward to this one. I’m hoping it’ll be funny, make me fall for the characters, and give Im Ji Yeon the comedy showcase she deserves.

The Premise

My Drama List

Kang Dan Shim was the most reviled villainess in the Joseon court. She rose from nothing to become a first-rank royal concubine — the highest position achievable — using nothing but her sharp wit, manipulative tactics, and sheer audacity. No powerful family backing her. No political allies. Just HER. They called her a “national seductress.” And then they sentenced her to death by poisoning.

But instead of dying, her soul gets transported to the year 2026. She wakes up in the body of Shin Seo Ri — a nameless, struggling actress who can’t catch a break. Dan Shim went from royal opulence to… a one-room flat and instant noodles. The adjustment period must be WILD.

And here’s the thing about Dan Shim — she’s no damsel in distress. Even the worst situation in 2026 is better than being dead. So she takes control of Seo Ri’s life, adapts to the modern world with terrifying speed, and starts using her Joseon-era survival instincts in a 21st century setting.

This brings her crashing into Cha Se Gye (Heo Nam Jun), a third-generation chaebol heir known as a “monster created by capitalism.” He’s ruthless, cold, and powerful. Dan Shim takes one look at him and declares — you’ll do. She’s going to use him as her shield in this new world.

A Joseon-era manipulator meets a modern corporate predator. Both are used to being the smartest person in the room. Neither backs down. Love-hate energy from the jump.

The Cast

Im Ji Yeon (임지연) as Shin Seo Ri / Kang Dan Shim

Known for: The Glory, Money Heist: Korea, Nice to Not Meet You, Lies Hidden in My Garden, The Killing Vote

I’m a MASSIVE fan of Im Ji Yeon. I really like the dramas I’ve seen her in. Most recently I watched her in Nice to Not Meet You where she was SO funny — it felt like she stole the entire show. She has this natural comedic timing that people don’t talk about enough because The Glory made everyone see her as the villain queen. But she can do COMEDY. And that’s exactly what this role needs.

She’s playing a double role here — the possessed actress Seo Ri AND the Joseon villainess Kang Dan Shim. That means she needs to show us two completely different women inhabiting the same body. The sweet, struggling actress and the ruthless, cunning concubine who’s suddenly driving the ship. That’s the kind of dual performance that can make a career. She’s already shown range — let her show even MORE.

The fish-out-of-water element is what’s going to make this fun. A woman who was used to servants, silk robes, and court politics now navigating smartphones, social media, and capitalism? I need to see her reaction to delivery apps.

Heo Nam Jun (허남준) as Cha Se Gye

Known for: When the Phone Rings, Your Honor, Sweet Home S2 & S3, Snowdrop, The Matchmakers, The Impossible Heir

I’ve seen Heo Nam Jun in a few dramas and can I just say — this man’s voice is DEEP. Like properly deep. It’s one of those voices that immediately gives a character weight and presence. I like him but I’m not sure how much yet — this drama might be the one that tips me either way.

Cha Se Gye is the grandson of the Cha-il Group chairman but runs his own independent business rather than working within the family empire. He’s described as a “monster created by capitalism” — ruthless, cold, entitled. But when Dan Shim in Seo Ri’s body starts disrupting his perfectly controlled world? The love-hate dynamic is going to be ELECTRIC.

The chaebol-meets-Joseon-villainess pairing is genius because BOTH of them understand power. She wielded it through court politics and seduction. He wields it through money and corporate intimidation. They speak the same language but in completely different dialects.

Jang Seung Jo (장승조) as Choi Mun Do

Known for: The Good Detective (S1 & S2), As You Stood By, Dali and the Cocky Prince, Adamas

I LOVE this man. I first saw him in The Good Detective and have loved him since. This man can ACT. In As You Stood By he was AMAZING — he played TWO characters and it was so believable. I wish he was the male lead more often because he has the talent for it. He consistently delivers nuanced, layered performances that make you believe every word.

Choi Mun Do is the CEO of Cha-il Construction. He’s the nephew of the Cha-il Group chairman — which means he’s a rival to Se Gye within the family business empire. He’s ambitious, dreaming of becoming chairman himself. So we’ve got a succession battle between the grandson and the nephew, with Dan Shim in the middle of it all.

With Jang Seung Jo playing the rival, the succession battle scenes are going to be properly intense. He and Heo Nam Jun are going to have great combative chemistry.

Kim Min Seok (김민석) as Baek Gwang Nam

Known for: Descendants of the Sun, Because This Is My First Life, Doctor John, Typhoon Family

I’m going to be honest — I’m not a fan of Kim Min Seok. There’s something about him that I just don’t like. I can’t put my finger on it but the vibe isn’t there for me. He’s in a supporting role here so hopefully it won’t take away from the drama.

Lee Se Hee (이세희) as Yun Ji Hyo

Known for: The Dream Life of Mr. Kim, Young Lady and Gentleman

I loved Lee Se Hee in A Virtuous Business — she was great in that and it put her on my radar properly. She plays a top Korean star who constantly clashes with Seo Ri. So we’ve got a rivalry between two actresses — one who’s already famous and one who’s suddenly possessed by a Joseon-era concubine who has zero patience for modern celebrity ego. That clash is going to be entertaining. Looking forward to seeing her in this.

The Creative Team

Director Han Tae Sub — directed Stove League and Cheer Up. Stove League was a massive hit on SBS, and Cheer Up showed he could do younger, more vibrant storytelling. Both skills are needed here — the Joseon-era scenes require weight, and the modern comedy scenes require pace and energy.

Writer Kang Hyun Joo — wrote Lost in Starlight. Original screenplay.

Production by Studio Dragon and Gill Pictures — Studio Dragon is behind almost every major K-drama of the last five years. Their quality control is consistent.

The drama follows Phantom Lawyer in the SBS Friday-Saturday slot — so it’s inheriting a strong timeslot.

What I’m Excited About

The Mr. Queen energy. A soul from the past waking up in a modern body and causing CHAOS? That’s the exact formula that made Mr. Queen one of the funniest K-dramas ever. My Royal Nemesis is doing it with a FEMALE villain from Joseon going INTO the future instead of a modern man going back in time. Same energy, different direction. And the potential for comedy is massive.

Im Ji Yeon doing comedy. After Nice to Not Meet You I KNOW she can be funny. The Glory made her famous as a villain. This could make her famous as a comedy lead. She deserves both.

The Joseon survival instincts in a modern world. A woman who manipulated her way to first-rank concubine now has to manipulate her way through 2026 Seoul. The skills transfer. The methods don’t. That gap is where the comedy lives.

Jang Seung Jo as the rival. I wish he was the male lead, but him as the ambitious rival in a succession battle is the next best thing. He’s going to be brilliant.

Heo Nam Jun’s voice. In a love-hate dynamic, that deep voice is going to make every confrontation scene feel weighted. Every argument is going to SOUND good.

14 episodes on Netflix. Weekly release, Friday and Saturday. Enough room to develop characters properly without dragging.

They poisoned her in Joseon. She opened her eyes in 2026. They gave her instant noodles instead of royal banquets. She looked at the chaebol heir and said — you’ll do.

A villainess doesn’t die. She adapts.
